tank testing
Whilst working at QinetiQ I was involved in a number of towing tank experiments including AC yacht and ship resistance, detailed water turbine power, resistance and seakeeping trials.

One example which resulted in the publication An investigation into the benefits of reconfigurable was my involvement as technical lead of this £65k design and test research project which involved determining how to test the magnitude of hydrodynamic benefit that can be achieved by having a ship that can reconfigure its shape resulting in optimisation for both cruise and sprint speeds, followed by calculations that used this data, combined with alternative propulsion configurations to determine the fuel savings that may be achievable in a ‘real world’ situation. A transom flap and hull extension were designed and tested and alternative forms of reconfigurable propulsion investigated. This project contained technical design aspects, involved overseeing a team of technical colleagues and facility staff, control of budget, control of manufacturing and testing, obtaining facility quotes and tendering for manufacturing work packages, running an experiment as trials manager which included carrying out a risk analysis and ensuring health and safety policies were upheld and presenting and reporting the results and findings.
